Tampa’s amphitheatre swings hard between genres this week, and Friday is the country half of that split personality.
Dan + Shay headline “The Young Tour” at MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheatre on Friday, October 16, at 7 p.m., with Tyler Hubbard and Josh Ross opening. The duo — Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney — built their run on close-harmony ballads like “Tequila” and “Speechless,” the kind of songs that turn an amphitheatre lawn into a few thousand people singing in unison rather than a mosh pit. Hubbard, formerly of Florida Georgia Line, has been building his own solo catalog; Josh Ross is the newer name on the bill, a Canadian country act still working his way up amphitheatre-sized rooms.
It’s a quieter booking than what the Fairgrounds stage has carried most of this year — Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson and Mötley Crüe both played this same stage this year — and the very next night the venue flips just as hard into hip-hop, when $uicideboy$ bring the Grey Day Tour to the same stage. That whiplash is becoming the Fairgrounds’ whole identity this fall: whatever you’re into, there’s a night for it within 24 hours.
