Historic West Tampa has a real, functioning artist community operating out of a single building at 1715 N Howard Ave, and it’s easy to miss if you’re not looking for it. Art Lofts Tampa offers private studio space to local creatives — not a gallery that displays finished work, but a place where the work actually gets made. “Proud to call West Tampa home, we offer private studios for local creatives,” is how the space describes itself, and the roster backs it up: tattoo and piercing artist Suzi Rue keeps a private studio there, describing it as the place where she “tattoo[s], paint[s], and bring[s] ideas to life.”
The building isn’t closed off to the public, either. Art Lofts Tampa maintains a gallery and event space that welcomes outside use — “we gladly welcome artists, makers and collectors to utilize our gallery and event space for their next event or seminar” — making it as much a community venue as a working studio complex.
Anchoring the building is Brewed Awakenings, a Cuban-style cold brew café that shares the space and has built its own following independent of the art scene around it — currently sitting at 4.8 stars on Yelp. It’s the kind of pairing that makes sense once you’re standing in it: strong coffee next door to open studio doors, with the two feeding off each other’s foot traffic.
There’s no formal museum-style experience here, and that’s the point. Art Lofts Tampa isn’t trying to be a polished cultural institution — it’s a working building where West Tampa’s creative community actually spends its time, open enough that visitors can wander in for a coffee and end up talking to the artist whose studio is right next door.
